Street Drugs: A Growing Threat to Public Health

The world of street drugs is evolving faster than it ever has, with new and more dangerous substances hitting the streets regularly. In recent years, the rise of synthetic opioids, stimulants, and hallucinogens are sold under various names designed to mislead users about their true effects. These new drugs are destroying communities, as they are frequently untested, unregulated, and more potent than the substances they are looking to replace.

Fentanyl

Known on the streets as many things, but to name a few there is “Dance Fever,” “Goodfellas,” “Murder 8,” and “Tango & Cash.” Comes in either a powdered or liquid form and most often is mixed with other drugs like cocaine and heroin. What makes fentanyl such a problem is that even the smallest amount can be fatal. 2 milligrams of fentanyl is lethal enough to kill someone.

According to CDC, two common fentalogues are referred to as “Pink” and “Ninja.” “Pink” refers to isotonitazene or fluoroisopropyfentanyl and is stronger than fentanyl. “Ninja” is another fentanyl compound and is marketed as heroin but is significantly more potent.Fentanyl and other synthetic opioids are the most common drugs involved in overdose deaths. Over 150 people die every day from overdoses related to these synthetic opioids like fentanyl.

Xylazine

Known on the streets as The “Zombie Drug” or “Tranq” is a synthetic substance that

began to surface in recent years. It is a veterinary tranquilizer typically used on animals.

It is not intended for human consumption but is often mixed with opioids like fentanyl or heroin to intensify their effects. Xylazine is extremely dangerous for humans as it

causes sedation, difficulty breathing, low blood pressure, slowed heart rate, severe

withdrawal symptoms, and death.

Based on the introduction CDC Made for Xylazine, A scary fact about xylazine is that it does not respond to Narcan so the overdose cannot be reversed.

Flakka

Known as “Bath Salts” is a synthetic stimulant that is linked to intense, violent behavior

and hallucinations. It can cause agitation, aggression, delirium, and dangerous heart

arrhythmias. Effects are like methamphetamine but are more unpredictable, which has

led to more overdoses.

Methoxetamine

Known as “Mexxy” on the streets, is a dissociative anesthetic related to ketamine. Has

similar affects as PCP and has been linked to delirium, hallucinations, and extreme

agitation.

Mephedrone

“Meow Meow” is a stimulant that has effects similar to ecstasy and methamphetamine.

Part of the designer drugs wave. It is a stimulant that produces euphoria and

heightened energy. Causes agitation, paranoia, and seizures.

Psilocybin

“Shrooms” or “Magic Mushrooms” which contain the psychedelic compound psilocybin,

can have a range of effects on the body and mind. When consumed, psilocybin is

converted into psilocin, the active substance that produces the majority of the effects.

Those effects being altered perception, visual and auditory hallucinations, ego

dissolution, emotional shifts, and time distortion.

Mescaline

Mescaline is a powerful psychedelic with a long history of use in spiritual and

therapeutic contexts. It induces profound changes in perception, cognition, and emotion, often leading to experiences of unity, euphoria, or spiritual insight. It has a relatively low toxicity but can cause unpleasant physical effects like nausea and increased heart rate. Despite being illegal in many places, mescaline is still used in indigenous ceremonies, and research into its therapeutic potential is ongoing.

What are the implications?

In addition to the serious harm to one's own health, these street drugs may have far-reaching effects on others. In a state of delirium, hallucinations or violent impulses, drug abusers may commit injurious acts against others, even leading to serious violence. In addition, the illegality of the drug trade contributes to organized crime, street violence and community safety problems. The behavior of drug abusers may also cause psychological stress to family members and friends, disrupt family relationships, and even trigger collateral financial hardship. Most importantly, behaviors such as drugged driving may endanger innocent lives and cause incalculable damage to society. Therefore, the drug problem is not just a personal problem, but a threat to the whole society
