Understanding the Importance of Chain of Custody in Drug Testing and Why it Matters

When it comes to workplace drug testing, credibility is crucial. Employers rely on these results to ensure a smooth hiring process and enforce workplace safety and compliance. This is why every sample collected must follow a documented process known as a Chain of Custody (COC).

At Badger Testing Services, we follow chain of custody procedures for every sample, ensuring accurate results and complying with state and federal standards.

What is Chain of Custody?

According to the Association of Diagnostics and Laboratory Testing,  Chain of Custody is the movement and location of a sample from the time it is obtained until results are given, to prove the integrity of a piece of evidence. This testing ensures that the donor has identified the specimen as their own, and no tampering or substitution has occurred. This form also ensures that every person who handles the specimen is identified, ensuring that results comply with DOT and non-DOT standards.

COC not only protects employers who enforce a drug-free workplace but also the donor, ensuring that results are accurately tied to the right person.

Key Steps in the Chain of Custody Process

  1. Identification and Verification

The donor provides valid identification. Identification is verified, and the sample collection begins.

  1. Specimen Collection

A collector begins the collection process in accordance with testing requirements. The sample collected can be urine, hair, saliva, or blood.

  1. Sealing & Labeling

Immediately after collection, the sample is sealed with tamper-evident tape. The donor signs the seal to ensure integrity. This is one of the most important steps in a sample collection.

  1. Documentation

The official Chain of Custody is signed and completed by both the donor and collector. The information presented on the COC form includes collection details, specimen type, unique specimen ID, laboratory information, and any other necessary information.

  1. Secure laboratory transfer and testing

The sealed specimen is transported securely to the laboratory, creating a documentation trail. The lab then tests the sample and reports the results back to the requesting party.

Chain of custody is the foundation of accurate, reliable drug testing. Strict COC protocols ensure fairness, consistency, and legal protection for all parties.
